Trailer mods and a paint job for the upcoming fishing season

Originally built for a 21' expedition row boat. Eventually made the journey from the coastal US to Australia. The website chronicles this incredible journey and accomplishment. 

 

Last summer, with a 6hp Johnson

 

Pushing away, not bad for a 1966 model, though not enough power to cross the lake quickly

As received, the 16' doesnt fill up the 21' the trailer was fit for. Tongue weight was too heavy as the axle was too far back and the taillight rails were too far back, as for the boat below.

New power, 4 stroke clean and quite, and lightest in its class at 81lbs.

More trailer stuff, gettin closer to done

The quest for a lightweight rail trailer is almost done. No more pulling a heavy duty box trailer for a couple of 70lb canoes. Besides the fuel efficiency, being lightly sprung is easier on the boats. Two tier racks will be removable for winter storage inside, and the upper racks will go to 3 or 4 boats from just the lower ones used for one or two. 

A trip to the Metal Supermarket and its on its way, best part is they cut to length so just put it together and welder up.

Need to take the sparks outisde, welding inside not the best idea....

Be done in time for the first replica to make its way north

Small areas of rust to be cut out and replaced, where boat winch was located.

Next is mount lights, new wheels and knock down for  paint then reassemble.

Holiday work

Time off and getting a lot done. Whole week to bring projects up to speed.

New hardware for trailer assembly, local supplier provided Grade 9 hardware to replace the old stuff . Not going to be stranded down old washboard and dirt roads with a broken bolt. $20 got it all.

Rack mounts bolted in place and will allow removal of racks.

Got some work done on the jointer. Bearings pressed on cutterhead, table blasted clean ready for final assembly and paint

New tapered sheaves, no more keys. Will be perfectly smooth turning around 4000 rpm.

Motor sheave new and matched to cutterhead to provide correct rpm

1hp Leeson motor will provide lots of power

Quick visit to an old employer from 20+ year ago, and the parts went into a blast cabinet with a 6' table and in 3 minutes multiple layers of paint and rust are gone

Completely clean after the steel shot blasts it, light etch ready for primer and finish.

Everything coated, as once its bare steel it will rust even with elevated humidity.

Next up is assembly....

Next is hubs, disassembly for paint and reassembly - silver and black most likely.

This one will be set for multiple canoes and kayaks, and as light as it is, will tow easily with the smallest of vehicles.
